Asbestos in your home
If a home was built or renovated before 1987, products made from bonded asbestos cement that may have been used in the home include:
– Fibro sheeting (flat and corrugated) in walls and ceilings
– Water drainage and flue pipes
– Roofing shingles and guttering
– The backing of floor coverings
– Loose fill insulation
In NSW, if you are removing loose/friable asbestos or more than 10m2 of bonded asbestos from your home, you are required to engage a licensed asbestos removalist.
For smaller jobs, Council advises you check out this Fact Sheet, which has been released by the NSW Government, and which provides information on safely removing asbestos waste from your home.
November is Asbestos Awareness Month
Council actively participates in Asbestos Awareness month, by posting and advertising the risks and requirements that come with dealing with asbestos. Education and awareness of asbestos is critical towards ensuring the safety of you and others, and asbestos awareness month provides and excellent opportunity to learn more.
However, home owners and renovators should always be mindful of finding asbestos around their property, regardless of the time of year. Visit the Asbestos Awareness website for more information.
